We love it when people tell us how their adoptions are going, and this email was sent to us from Mike and Illana:

We collected Marley (aka Zelda) on Saturday 4th April 2009 from DARG in Hout Bay and on the way home thought that she was going to be quite a handful due to her zealous behaviour when we took her out of the kennels.

Needless to say we were we pleased when we got her home and bathed her to find that all she wanted was LOVE and in a big way.

She sleeps next to our bed on continental pillows and does not move all night, barring if she hears some movement and then she growls to let us know. She has fitted in exceptionally well and is an absolute pleasure in our home.

She was a bit timid initially on walks and I did not let her off the lead, but after one week I thought she would be fine with other people and dogs and every day I take her to the Green Belt in Constantia and she just loves it and all the other people and their dogs. We recently got her a play mate a Staffie Puppy and the two of them hit it off from day one and are the best of mates.

I would have no hesitation in getting another Staffie Cross from DARG as all they want is a bit of love – Marley gets lots and has landed with her bum in butter. The reward one gets from getting such a dog is that they really appreciate being in a home and being loved and if one can give them that little thing then you will have a mate for life.

And thanks from us at DARG to Illana and Mike for welcoming Marley in and making her feel extra welcome and loved!

A couple were driving along near the Panorama area on Friday, 1 May when they spotted a terribly unkempt dog at the side of the road. They rescued him and brought him in to DARG.

Despite his pitiful condition and a very serious injury to his leg, he allowed the DARG volunteers to wash him and trim all the matted, mucky dreadlocks away. It took two volunteers more than an hour to get him into a condition where we could begin to help him. During the whole time, he never growled or snapped once, taking the treatment like a champ. It’s because of his gentleness and patience that the staff at DARG decided to name him Mungo, meaning Amiable in ancient Gaelic.

We’ve treated his leg, and it looks like he’s going to be fine once he recovers and gets some much needed loving care and attention. As soon as his leg heals, we’ll give him a proper groom, some food in his tummy and a start on the road to recovery. We’re desperately looking for a temporary foster home for Mungo in which to recuperate until he’s well enough to find his forever family. If you can assist us, please enquire at the DARG offices by calling (021) 790 0383 or (021) 790 2050.

Everyone please be very careful over the next week or so. Tonight is Halloween, November 5 is Guy Fawkes Night and idiot kids are going to be setting off fireworks all over the show. Please make preparations to lock your animals in at night or otherwise protect them from the noise which they don’t understand.

Update: As it happens, one of my cats (who normally never leaves our grounds) disappeared on Friday night when fireworks were going off, and spent two nights up a tree in a garden several houses away. It was an incredibly traumatic weekend for the cat, not to mention my wife and I!

So PLEASE remember to lock your pets in on from Wednesday afternoon. Fireworks night is really terrible from the animals’ perspective, so do what you can to protect them.

Remember that a dog or cat can experience sharp physical pain from a loud sound which causes humans no discomfort at all.

This old boy was attacked by a a group of dogs. His owner, who lives in Imizamu Yethu, rushed him to DARG on a Sunday afternoon.

He was soaked, bloodied, freezing and in shock. Jenny, the nurse, was quick to warm him up with the water bottle (donated by the kind public!) and then rushed him to Penzance Vet (they were closed so the vet on standby was kind enough to come in).

Buksie was operated on right there and then. He had 17 puncture wounds, 2 of which were in the lungs! We’re happy to say that Buksie survived and was able to go home with his very grateful owner who managed to contribute, very proudly, R100 towards his bill. While that was a great help, it still leaves an outstanding R600 to pay!

If you can help by donating towards Buksie’s vet bill, please contact us! (Ask for Jenny)
